Rolling Stones and the Super Bowl

So apparently the reason the audio sucked was because the NFL was being paranoid and intentionally cutting lines. You know it's bad when they're cutting out old guys saying stuff that doesn't come close to what is on most radio stations and pretty much any prime time TV show. Apparently advertising agencies are blaming the state of the ads on the same issue. Choice quote from the second one: "[Ellis] Verdi said people probably think GoDaddy.com is a porn site." While their tactics are a little odd, at least they're persistent (13 rejected attempts) and make a point.

iTunes music shares

Daring person of the day. I wonder if anyone will complain and we'll have to pull it. Image is clickable to the unblurred (not clean) version.

Server move

This site has changed servers. Everything should be working the same, and seems to be at first glance, but as with everything like that stuff happens. Let me know if something seems to not be working right.

Beyond iCEBOX

I stumbled across this and my first thought was wondering what kitchen appliances could make use of a wireless card. Turns out coffeemaker, breadmaker, and microwave. It's a digital integration system from Beyond Digital Living that allows you to scan the barcodes and it'll do the rest. Rather interesting.

Uzbekistan and fur

Uzbekistan banned fur underwear. Sorta random, but there was a comment about it in the Strib a few days back and it managed to come up in conversation today, so there's the link.

Underworld: Evolution

Tonight I went to see Underworld: Evolution with JoeBuck and Travis. While not a culture changing movie or anything, it's good for what it is (a very bloody action movie). If that's not your type of movie, probably want to stop reading now. My favorite part was definitely the all-in-one particle bombs. Push a button, and after a delay it starts spraying in all directions, and then sparks it. Way to use simple high explosive physics to great effect. Lots of interesting and rarely (if ever) used ways of killing people, and unlike a lot of movies they don't creatively cut it either. Like ripping the top of skulls off, jamming spikes through the chin and exiting the top of the head, and throwing into the center of spinning helicopter blades. Of course the standard vampire movie stuff of emptying clips into people with blood flying everywhere, sucking blood, and impaling are there too. They did a great job with the effects, although it seemed like the telling the story part was sorta a second thought. The sex scene definitely didn't fit and was just odd being in there. I'll definitely be getting the DVD and watching both movies together, probably with a movie night involved.

EPIC

Brad sent me a link to EPIC 2014. It's been around a while so you may have seen it, but it's still an interesting watch. And if nothing else, the logo is cool.

Free VMWare GSX?

May be announced next week. Of course that's according to CNET. Would be cool if it happens though. I wonder if it'll ever run on the new Intel Macs.

Freezing Hard Drives (and how not to defrost)

This was posted to Resnet-L yesterday (went through today) by Adam Ward. List archives are closed, so you can subscribe to see the thread/full attribution, but here's the funniest story in the thread so far.

Just be careful who is around when talking about Freezing drives. I had an interesting call towards the end of last year. A young lady had her hard drive go bad. Her boyfriend overheard a few of the CompSci students talking about freezing drives to recover data. Well, he decided to freeze her's to give it a try.

Her boyfriend called and left me the following voicemail.

I put the drive in the chest freezer over the weekend. When I went to get it, it was cold, so I put it some cold water to defrost it. Well, it was still cold about 10 minutes later, and she really needed her paper, so I decided to use the microwave to defrost it. I don't think that worked. How is someone supposed to defrost a frozen drive? Should I put it in the oven? Oh yeah, any reason why this would cause my microwave to stop working?

I wish I was only joking about the above, but I tell that story every year to the student workers, to remind them to be careful of what they say around non-techie students, especially when they are on the job!

MS GUID and web browsing

So I'm a couple days behind on my /. reading... I was reading and came across a link to how Microsoft passes GUIDs between domains. At first I wasn't too concerned. The authentication system I built has very similar behavior in how it passes identity information between servers. The key difference is that my system uses it to transfer credentials, which are unique per site and only given to trusted sites or less trusted after verifying it's OK with the user. The scary part is a GUID is shared everywhere, and Microsoft will give it to anyone who asks. For example if you go here you'll get right back to my site but you'll note your GUID in the URL. And of course in my web server logs... Fun, huh? The explanation about that URL is at the very bottom of the page at that first link.
