The rest of the SLC trip

Yes, I made it back safely, despite my not having posted any more pictures. They are up now though, of our hotel, and Salt Lake City. As we ended up finishing 4 days of training in 2.5 days (going slow, and just chatting a lot), we had some Q&A and general discussion time with one of the developers. We then had a full day off to wander around town, so we got in a few miles of walking and a lot of touristy stuff.

Kids and the doghouse

Some people were arrested because their son slept in the doghouse "during freezing weather". So the police would have been OK with it if it wasn't freezing weather?

First round from the trip

Today was day 1 of training in Salt Lake City. Apparently we ended up in a group where everyone had programming experience, and that has never happened before, so we ended up going ahead through part of tomorrow's material and still finishing early. We had an hour before the shuttle to the hotel arrived, so Ross and I went and visited Gallivan Center and made a quick walk through Temple Square. I posted some pictures. They were pretty much taken while walking due to the time constraint, and we didn't have time to go into anywhere, so we're hoping to have some time to visit it again later in the week.

Andy Griffith for Sheriff

Some guy in Wisconsin changed his name while running for Sheriff. And then the real Andy Griffith sued him. I do like the article says it was because of the US trademark system though. In a lot of these that doesn't come up until after everyone gets upset at the plaintiff.

Deposit at the Burrito Bank

If you like Chipotle at all, have you made your deposit at the Burrito Bank? Yes it's a good deal, assuming you can make it back once this year to claim your deposit, and you'll spend $25 there within the next 4 years. For a financial comparison, we'll say the interest on the investment is the free burrito - lets price that at $5.50. That makes the interest on the term of the investment 22%. If you instead put the $25 in a high-yield savings account (a reasonable comparison for the term over which $25 in Chipotle bucks will last, not the resulting calculated comparison term), at 5.05% APY (real current rate, 4.93% APR compounded daily, assume no rate changes over the term), it would take 1473 days to achieve the same return. That's 4 years, 12 days (there's a leap year in there). At that length a more likely investment would be a CD at 5.20% APY, which would shorten the term to around 3.79 years. So unless you won't buy 5 more burritos within around 4 years, you should go attempt to make your deposit at the Burrito Bank.

The Next Step

Yesterday as I was voting this little old lady (I'm guessing in her 70s) next to me finished filling out her ballot, and as she started walking to the ballot box quietly muttered, "There, I voted. Now if I want to bitch, I can bitch." Such an awesome statement for our current political situation. I have no problem with that though (provided one votes - write in someone rather than not vote if you don't like the candidates), I'm just glad the ads are ending.

The Siege

Just watched The Siege. Somehow I forgot that I had seen it before, and how great a movie it is. I probably saw it 6 years ago though, and the movie has a different impact now. The tagline of the movie was "On November 6th our freedom is history." In 1998, that was not only the release date, but also a Tuesday...

Endless Wire

Yesterday I picked up The Who's latest disc, Endless Wire. I haven't finished listening to it yet, but I really like it so far, better than their older stuff. That is likely at least partially an effect of the recording quality, but it's the musical sound too. Those who really have an attachment to their old stuff may not like this as much.

Risk, Fear and Control

I think this quote from Daniel Gilbert has a surreal truth that makes it funny.

When people feel insulted or disgusted, they generally do something about it, such as whacking each other over the head, or voting.

It's from an article he wrote, which also has a funny title. Found it through one of Schneier's posts, which is also interesting. It seems the whole issue is a variation on control vs can't control, being that which people perceive can be controlled, vs those things that are perceived as being uncontrollable.
