"No Divorce" policy

"Staff and faculty members at Oklahoma Christian University could get fired if they get divorced, according to a policy the private school plans to implement next month."

Huh. The article notes it applies to prospective employees too, and they "may not be hired if they've been divorced."

Wow, that seems like a descrimination lawsuit just waiting to happen.

They are a private university, they can do whatever they want in terms of hiring. Bethel can do the same thing with religion.

While true that they can do what they want (as long as it's not one of the big four, big three in their case as religious is allowed for religious organizations), it doesn't exactly give a good impression to the public. Like the last quote the "may not" probably means they'd have to interview to find out reasons and stuff, and who would want to sit through a evaluation on their prior personal life to get a job? It's pretty much excluding people due to what they may have done in the past (possisibly before they became a Christian).

No. Private or not, they are a corporation and are subject to the laws of the land. And it is illegal to ask a job applicant questions of marital status or even sexual orientation. Take them to court and they will lose 100% of the time. But that's almost beside the point. It makes you wonder if such a bigoted and hateful institution like that is worth working for to begin with.

Yea, laws of the land. The marital status laws are state level (other than employment within the federal government), and only a handful of states have that. There's no law stopping them, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea either.
