The missing mailbox

About a month ago, someone driving by apparently hit my mailbox, leaving the front chipped, hinge destroyed and the cover in pieces in the neighbor's yard. Based on the height, it looked like someone probably hit it with the mirror on their SUV. Last week I had finally acquired a replacement box, but unfortunately had not yet installed it. Then this morning while shoveling my brother noticed it was missing, and found it in the neighbor's yard, mangled and the mounting hardware destroyed. So now I have no mailbox, and need to go back to the store to get things to mount it. At least I'm not really expecting anything this week.

Did the plow hit it this time? Might I suggest making the box pivot? So when something hits it, it swings out of the way. I've seen a few of these along highways frequented by rookie plow drivers and they seem to work well.

I think it may have been more snow, as the post (under the mailbox) is fine. As for the pivot, it would be hard without building another structure for the post. I'm just going to take the metal mailbox approach, and then if it doesn't last, I'll take more extensive measures. I still like the approach of the guy whose mailbox kept losing to the plow, so he replaced it with a steel construction I beam (with more below ground than above). The next time the mailbox won.

You should fashion a mailbox from spare computer parts. That would be genius!!

I second that. It'd be kinda fun to see an old computer tower sitting out there as your mailbox.

The problem with building my own is getting it approved may be annoying.

Out of parts? that's cool but make it functional. I'm thinking a web cam built in with motion detector that logs 30 seconds of video everytime the door is opened to a webpage. Maybe some sort of flipper thing so you can flip through your mail, while still in the box, and see, via the webcam, whats waiting for you? Ohohoh, and pneumatic tubing, that's key.

I think that's a bit over the top. I'm thinking something to notify me if there's anything in the box could be useful though.

Wow, I'm very excited to see where this mailbox madness is going. Happy Birthday JMo!
