I'm glad the week is over... I had a test today which started at 11:10, and I finished up in time to go to lunch at 11:30 with some coworkers and classmates (yea, in that class - we didn't spend much time studying for that one either...). Afternoon was a mix of miscellaneous stuff, most of which I have forgotten by now. The biggest thing was probably figuring out with a coworker how to get websense working after an "upgrade" managed to look like everything was fine, but it really didn't see the site database, everything acted different, and nothing was actually getting blocked. Oh well, its working now. And we thought of a funny idea to confuse/scare people when they hit a blocked site. It's probably not something we can really implement from the real system, but it's fun to mess with people a little bit... Anyways, time for the weekly weekend initiation event...

The end of the week is finally here... The day was sorta weird I guess. This morning I was busy, but now I can't remember what I did... I think that means it's really time for the weekend... Then there was Chipotle, a quiz in AI, and learning about Top Spin. Then discovering we need to haul out the drill again to mount bluepill in the racks, so that has to wait... The library kiosks now have printing too, and the SSL certificates on webmail won't expire on Saturday anymore (that was fun as it involved playing with an IIS3 server for a bit)... At least I had some variety though. After work Dave and Nick had 10 and Jeff and I over and we had steaks on the grill and watched a really weird movie and sat around watching TV. Fun stuff, but we were all tired and definitely ready for the weekend... Oh yea, Mike J says I'm supposed to mention The Charm of the Bead. I think he said something about google...

Getting to sleep in is always a good thing. No networking today meant only one class (in which we watch a goblet be shattered by sound), and work. Work involved playing with lpd and getting a printing system working for the kiosk machines when they are in unrestricted mode (a way to allow public web browsing/research after showing appropriate ID to prevent abuse). That should make the library happy. "Big quiz" tomorrow in AI, which doesn't sound like fun, but doesn't seem hard either (probably a bad sign). My puzzle solver is still going crazy trying to brute-force it. I'm guessing at some point I should look for an algorithm to solve it properly. Maybe we'll discover something in class tomorrow...

Roaming profiles - such a pain, but then you realise the alternatives and the problems they'd cause. I ended up fixing a machine which had been corrupting the profile of everyone who had logged in over the past two weeks or so, and fixed/reset a few profiles from that. Then there was an unrelated one where her profile just kept getting messed up and she couldn't get to her files or print. Another person who was over quota and had no clue why, and another person who just needed to clean some old junk out of her profile... And those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head... Why couldn't Microsoft have just had them work off the server rather than copy & sync? Wait, the servers are running Windows...they can't be depended on to be reliable... Anyways, I guess the day ended up well since I went to Rudolph's for some really good wings. Dave and I didn't know where it was, both our phones were dead, and 10 managed to lose us when some car cut between us, but we ended up making it OK... Except now I smell like smoke. Oh well, it's a tradeoff...

Actually got some stuff done today. I have a computer sending itself email every few minutes, and actually checking it's box and reading the message, which sounds really goofy but has a point. The sending checks that both email frontend servers are up, and the checking part makes sure that all the internal routing is working along with authentication and IMAP, and it all happens in a timely manner. Then I spent a few hours with my group for Networking working on our homework assignment. I actually decided to spend some time on physics, so actually researched and calculated the pressure that an elephant vs a woman wearing high heels would put on the floor. Crazy part is that one half a question is about half of my assignment by size. Oh well, should be interesting reading for the TA.

OK, so I haven't posted in a while. I blame it on avoiding homework. That sounds weird, but that means I've been doing a good job - here's the logic. Basically I've kept myself occupied enough with other stuff that I didn't get any time to think about stuff to put up here. Anyways, April fools was good, with my boss pulling a couple good pranks across the whole college - everyone's pictures in everything online were randomly modified, and Ellen Feiss became a student enrolled in a bunch of CS classes (complete with email address and everything) and is currently having some troubles with her PC causing her to loose a really good paper tracked in the ITS IncidentBase - last I checked on it Network Services was blaming the problem on her flooding ResNet with NetBEUI traffic in an attempt to figure out how to route it for a class assignment. I did actually end up finishing my homework, but in the process did way too much random stuff. Right now I have a dual Athlon XP2000+ machine with 1GB RAM and tons of IO capability running full out on both processors doing heavy number crunching and analysis... I have a feeling my office is gonna be rather warm tomorrow when I get there... :( Anyways, I need to get up in the morning...we are going to Chipotle for lunch (yea, that's still the highlight of everyone's week - it's like some sort of quest we all go on or something)...

I guess I'm getting more desparate at avoiding homework... For some reason rather than spend 30 minutes getting my physics homework out of the way, I set up a email lists server. I have no use for it at this point, but it's set up anyways if I ever find a use...

Now virtual postcards are moved to the new server. Also mostly redesigned it so it looks consistent, but it still needs a few aesthetic updates and other links that are generally considered a part of good web design. It all works technically though...

So jeremy.qux.net is now on a different server. I think I fixed all the bugs, but let me know if you get any server errors... The biggest public change is that yafiygi.com is now separate and not redirecting to http://jeremy.qux.net/random/ anymore.

I think I've finally caught up on sleep... After upgrading from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 (successfully, but with little sleep) in 2 days without playing around with the software at all first, and then 2 tests and a bunch of homework during the week, I came home last night and slept for a good 15 hours. Much better now. BTW, if you're planning on upgrading from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000, beware that depending on the migration method some extra mailbox permissions may be lost, and that MS reworked the way permissions are applied now (the integration with active directory means permissions to additional boxes are applied based on user rather than based on primary box). And now k5 is slow, so can't catch up there very easily...
